Souk Al Bahar marks the Holy Month of Ramadan and the Eid Celebration with ‘Art of Calligraphy’ exhibition

Dubai, UAE; September 3, 2011:

Souk Al Bahar, the dining, leisure, and shopping destination with Arabesque architectural features, located at The Old Town in Downtown Dubai, and a key mall development by Emaar Malls Group, is marking the Holy Month of Ramadan with the ‘Art of Calligraphy’ exhibition.

Featuring Arabic calligraphy artworks by globally recognised and emerging artists showing their talents in art of illumination presented by Glory Art Gallery, the exhibition will be held until September 10, 2011. It also provides viewers with a comprehensive overview of the evolution of Arabic calligraphy, the different styles, medium used and socio-cultural significance.

Nasser Rafi, Chief Executive Officer of Emaar Malls Group, said: “The exhibition at Souk Al Bahar opens doors to the evolution and history of calligraphy, and is a perfect fit to our Ramadan celebrations. The exhibition is expected to encourage talented youngsters to pursue the fine art, and give visitors to Downtown Dubai a true experience of our cultural and artistic heritage.”

From depicting the verses from the Holy Quran to serving as stamps of authority and depicting historic tales, calligraphy in the Arab world has a vivid heritage. The organisers of the exhibition Souk Al Bahar together with Glory Art Gallery  have undertaken extensive research to present the facts of Arabic calligraphy in a simple manner that appeals to all visitors. The exhibition is displayed around Souk Al Bahar.

Souk Al Bahar (meaning ‘Market of the Sailor’) derives its name from its traditional Souk-style architecture featuring natural stone corridors, high archways and subdued lighting and its unique ‘waterfront’ location on Burj Lake. Opening to spectacular views of The Dubai Fountain, the mall overlooks Burj Khalifa, the world’s tallest building, and is directly linked to The Dubai Mall, the world’s largest shopping and entertainment destination.

The mall offers a novel shopping and dining out experience for visitors to Downtown Dubai, described as ‘The Centre of Now.’ It features numerous stores including more than 22 food and beverage outlets several of them framing the mall’s waterfront promenade.
